I could not find much research on this and I was wondering how it changed from teaching with a Econ PhD from a non-business program or a liberal arts degree. Thanks!

Just two comments.

First of all, there is no exact statistics regarding the salary. You should just look at AACSB salary survey which shows average salaries for profs at all ranks. Even this survey results do not really reflect what my colleagues get. The short answer: It depends! Faculty salaries vary much more than you might imagine. It is not even a monotonic function of the ranking.

Second, I don't know what you want to do with such complete salary information. If it is for your own information, then I would say that you should not decide on your field of research based on salary.

I don't think you should concern yourself with whether you get 150K or 200K, as long as you get more than 100K. Even 100K is plenty for a university professor.

Incidentally, I was looking for a non-business school faculty position which would have paid about half of what I will get at the business school I am joining. It didn't work out in the end, but I think I would have been happier there.

My two cents - if you're really in for the money, why don't you get a job in finance? Get a masters in financial engineering or mathematical finance and then look for job at a hedge fund. Or go suffer for several years in i-banking and move over to private equity/venture capital. If you make a lot of $ and are quite successful + famous, you will be invited to speak and lecture at universities. Some alternative options to think about...

If you are comparing Business PhD salaries to Economics salaries, you will definitely find that Business PhD's pay more across the board. For example, you will find starting salaries for Economics PhD's to be around $70-75,000 per year unless you went to a top 10 school. If you went to a top 10 school you may see starting salaries closer to $80-90,000 at the most.

For Business PhD's, the starting salaries will vary according to your area of specialization (management, marketing, MIS, Finance, ect.), with the lowest area starting in the $90,000 range. I can tell you that Finance is going to be the highest paying right now with starting salaries in the $130,000-$160,000 range for anybody coming out of a top 50 program. If you go to a top 10 Finance program, some are seeing starting salaries in the $200,000 range, but you better be ready to be constantly publishing to stay in a job paying that much.
