1) Don't. If you want to go into PhD in Business, do econs, marketing, finance, OB, etc. Some (top) B-schs are scaling down their IS departments.... e.g. some are not recruiting new faculty to replace those who are leaving; some are not accepting IS PhD students this year. 2) But if insist on pursuing IS PhD in B-sch, get a MSc in econs. It is better than doing a MSc in IS in terms of applying to and surviving in an IS PhD program. E.g. I have taken 4 IS PhD seminars over the last 1 year - every single one is econs-based. Many times it feels like I'm walking out from an econs class rather than IS class.

Hey ! I'm Indian too and a girl to boot and I wanted to put in my two cents worth. Ancalagon - I know your family wants the best for you, but you have to find what you is that you should be doing !!. For someone with as good a profile as your's - I feel you need to develop some perspective on how short your life is and how shorter your productive life is.
One of the most important questions in many successful people's life is (after they have it all is) - What is that they were meant to do in life. I had the fortune of getting to that question much before (not sure if I have the answer of not). Make a life a conscious decision based on your capabilities and dreams. Trust me, in the longer run, if you'r happier, so will your family be...I dont know what else to say or how to say it but awareness in the key ...Peace !!!Based in Canada - Applied to 4 Canadian schools (Did'nt have much time) - Admit from 1 (2nd on my list); conditional admit from another. Not heard from other 2. |

Hey Kee...I'm in the same boat ! I got a date to give my GMAT at the end of the first week of January 2008, and I thought I'd only have time to apply to the Canadian school where I did my masters but I got a really good GMAT score and burnt midnight oil and money to get in about 4 applications. Have an admit from one of my preferred schools and a conditional one from another I'm not that keen on. Boy, do I feel blessed !
Ofcourse, no news from UfT. Let me know if you hear from them. Are you based in Canada Kee ? I'll Pm you... Nikki |

Kee and Live4today: Thanks a lot for the support. I really appreciate it.
tkkoh: this is really interesting. Could you perhaps elaborate more upon your assertions. I have not heard anything to this effect. Do you think IS programs are being phased out? |

Regarding the decline in CIS: There's a lot of truth to it. Departments all over the country are consolidating, renaming, dropping, etc. Overall, IS has dropped tremendously in prestige since the tech bubble burst. Check out this study from the AACSB (http://www.aacsb.edu/knowledgeservices/Home/SSExecSummary_05-06.pdf), especially Table 3, where you'll see a huge decline in IS hires since 2000, but also Table 5 (salaries for new doctorates).
In short, if you're interested in academia, do something different in a B-School like strategy, marketing, finance, or accounting. Any B-School discipline will give you a much better chance of getting a good job in academia. Even HR and OB--the hardest B-School fields to find jobs in and the least paying--are considerably better than anything in the social sciences, including economics and computer science. There is some really cool action going on in "I-Schools" (Schools of Informatics/Information), but the job market there is still not as good as in B-Schools. In short, if you're really interested in both computers and a well regarded academic position, you're probably better served doing a PhD in marketing, accounting, finance, or strategy--and then doing your research on topics that lie at the intersection of IS and strategy/finance/marketing/marketing. Such research would likely be more readily accepted in strategy and marketing, but depending on the specifics should be fine in accounting and finance as well. |

Thanks for the information espresso. The ischool caucus has some good research going on there. Your point on researching along the intersection of IT and a general management area is very well taken.
Methinks, I should structure my application around strategy programs now. Anyone know any good strategy journals / conferences? ![]() |
