Hey AT !! That is good news !! I think that you are in. I remember that you said that one of your LOR writers was close to people in Anderson. Connections matter a lot in getting into a good school.
Unfortunately, I have no connections so I will not get through anywhere. |

I simply cannot believe you won't get in anywhere. For what I've seen, you have a great profile. Sure, B-schools are a nightmare to get admitted to, because of their really small programs, but there is a saying in my country that goes: "The only people who don't go to grad school are those who don't really want to go to grad school". Literally. C'mon, tell us about your program goals, you Info. Systems PhD brother! ![]()

// BEGIN RANT
Hahahah ... well, lets see, none of the schools are really reaches for me. The top US schools only like the IITs/IIMS/IISC/ISI so even though I come from a top Indian school, I won't get in. None of my LOR writers are well known or connected through they are all very well published here and in pretty top journals. I have a fragmented education with concurrent undergraduate and post graduate degrees. My grades are good but look horrible in context with US 4.0 GPA though according to WES and the Indian Govt., my grades should be regarded as 4.0 in US terms so if I calculate on those terms my GPA is 3.9. I have a lot of research experience but I don't know how much independent research will be credited. In any case, most of it is published in conferences though I have 2 journal publications including one in Management Science. I have a mediocre GRE score with no 800 in quant. I have full time relevant professional work experience and numerous certifications in IT and I don't know how that will be credited as well since it is concurrent with my education (and none of anything is part time) I applied to Stern, Penn State, UVA, UMD, Stony Brook, MIT and a couple of other insignificants. I have a lot of pressure from home because my entire family has been in very good schools and expect me to go to a good schools. In India, more than the fit of the school, we care about the rankings or quality of the school. ![]() Still, I am proud of what I have done. I have self generated a curriculum when none seemed available because of the rigid education system here. We are expected to follow pre determined paths. I have degrees/diplomas in business (finance), mathematics and computer science because I wanted to do IS and there is no such MS or PhD in IS program here. The only option is a MBA in IS which is something I don't want to do. Often, I had 2 final examinations in the same day with overlapping times and I had to finish a 3 hour exam in 1.5 hours and rush to another campus through busy intercity traffic to give that 3 hour exam in 1.5 hours. Unfortunately, prestige and connections, as someone on the forum said matter a tad more in the applications process. I seem to remember mikethechampion who had the best profile I have ever seen but he got rejected from every school but Stanford just because he was not well connected. // END RANT (sorry... ) |

I want to request a big cheer-up for Ancalagon the Black. Like MikeTheChampion, he truly DESERVES his own "Stanford" to place their bets on him.
And to the rest of us...best of lucks as well!!!!

Hey all!!
I've heard about how competitive the B-schools' PhD as well as the economics PhD admissions can be, but don't panic; in the end, you can only go to one in your lifetime )It's almost over..."looking up at the hills..from where will my help come?" To digress, a friend of mine got into one of the big B-school PhD Finance programs in New York last year, and is only now realizing that there's more to a school than just its reputation. His advisor is really giving him the phdcomics' "Prof Smith" experience on steroids, but I know he'll make it. As will we all. All I'm saying is hang in there AstralTraveller and Alcalagon and the rest of us: worrying excessively never adds (though it subtracts from your peace of mind) to anything anyway. Even after the inevitable admissions come through, there will always be something to worry about. Assignments? Grades? Prelims? Getting on with professors? Girlfriend hanging in there as you prove every theorem under the sun but your commitment to spending time with her? Dissertation? Job? (aka "what do you mean you won't hire me..are you trying to tell me I did ALL THIS for nothing?!?!?) That's life in general...I'm in the same boat as you guys, and probably less qualified on paper than some of the geniuses whose profiles awe me, though I fully intend to enroll in the best possible just like the rest of us-since I know that my potential is only limited by my imagination and faith. It's hard, I know, but don't for a second let the waiting get you down, or make you question for a second the hard work you've put in thus far or your self worth (God forbid!!). Since we've all done our best thus far, the rest is out of our hands, at least for now. I'll go out on a limb to say that our PhDs won't define any of us or who we are per se; it's up to us to define IT. Things will work out, one way or the other, you'll see. Just don't act surprised if you get into the school of your dreams because you'll certainly deserve it! I, for one,look forward to studying with at least one TMer this coming fall! I'll be the one sitting by the window... Watch a movie. A long one. Then watch all the sequels and spin-offs. I propose a comedy... Hold on tight and Peace! BTW, how do I put up a sig at the bottom of a post (so it reoccurs with every future post? (Admission officers, if you're reading this, this question has nothing to do with how bright I am: I'm very bright, I assure you...brilliant in fact ![]() |
