PhD Marketing...Based on my profile, does my application strategy make sense?
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this board and I am so disappointed that I didn't find it sooner! I went through the majority of the admissions process alone and it would have been great to have the advice of everybody on the board. One of the things that I really had problems with was deciding where to apply. So here it is; I'll post my profile and tell everyone (1) where I applied, (2) where I didn't apply but looking back, maybe should have, and (3) my results so far. I'm really interested in what everybody thinks about (2). Do you think I had a shot at these schools? I want to do a PhD in marketing, behavioural focus. Undergrad: Information Systems (it's a long story) from an undergrad school in Canada. Bachelor of Commerce Undergrad GPA: 3.9+ (converted to a 4.0 scale) Grad: nothing Relevant undergrad courses: Social psych + 3 other psych courses, 4 marketing courses; a couple phd seminars in philosophy of science and multivariate stats GMAT - 700 combined; pretty even on both quant and verbal Experience: 4 years as a researcher...from R.Assistant to R.Associate; now a R.Manager for an institute that is not my undergrad school Publications: 4 publications, 1 in Journal of Marketing Education (biggest hit), 1 in a leadership journal, 2 in sport journals; none of these related to my stated interests; stuff in pipeline is very closely related to my interests and I am the PI. 10+ conference presentations; a few insignificant book chapters; some market research experience Reference letters: 2 amazing, 1 very good Other stuff: well read in marketing journals...very well defined research streams. Where I applied: Queen's (accepted, but was the MSc program; declined), Oregon (accepted), Minnesota (interviewing this weekend), UBC (interviewing this weekend), Colorado (nothing yet), UIUC (nothing yet), Florida (rejected) Where I regret not applying: Ohio State, USC Do you think I had a shot?: Berkeley, Stanford, Duke, NYU, Yale Should I have applied for more schools? Anyways, that's about it. Thanks in advance for all your input. I'm really curious on what everybody thinks of my strategy. Thanks! Gimpy Last edited by Gimpy : 03-04-2008 at 06:37 PM. I have the same kind of question.. and frankly we will never know the answer. Professors where I interviewed last week told me "yes" I might have gotten an offer from a top10 program.. but it's so random... |

Thanks for the reply! I totally agree. Although, the thing with me is that, except for NYU, I didn't have anybody at the other Top 10 schools who were into my areas of interest...so that would have probably put a dent in those applications. The leaders in my field are currently spread across the places I applied, but, I still feel that regret at not throwing in a couple more prayer applications (on top of Florida).
Is it weird for me to feel that way? |

Wow seriously? Honestly, it's very humbling for me to even hear something like that. I come from a small undergrad school in Canada and I never thought my application would make it past the mailroom at these schools.
But with regards to your question, just on placement strength alone, I would have had to go to Florida if I got in (which I didn't), even though the research fit wasn't as great as the other schools. Right now I'm thinking it's a dead heat battle between UBC, Colorado (if they ever get back to me!), and Minnesota, with Minnesota having a slight edge. Of course, I'm not even fully accepted to any of these programs yet, so the current "if I had to leave today I would go here" choice, is Oregon. Last edited by Gimpy : 03-04-2008 at 07:02 PM. IMHO- Minnesota has a much better reputation than the other schools and unless you have a strong preference for one school because of the research conducted in the department, I would go ahead with Minnesota. The one thing that I noted is that you did not have any program which was really in the top 10 and it doesn't hurt to take your chances a bit. Given the randomness of the process, you might have wanted to give that a shot.
