Masters in Statistics

Hi,

I'm a prospective Phd candidate and I was wondering, if a Masters degree in Statistics helps one in the admission process or coursework preparation? Already admitted applicants - please respond and share your opinions if you had a masters in stats.

Currently waiting applicants - please respond as well if you think it boosted your profile!

I appreciate your responses!

Cheers!

Stats is very useful. The MS should strengthen your
profile, plus be helpful in research and your PhD courses.

I am taking my msc in stats at I am interviewing at second tier Business Schools. Other people at the interviews had a Msc in Stats.. so I think it could be a nice way to boost your application in 2 years.

a masters in stats would strengthen a PhD application, all else being equal... if you feel like you are a strong candidate already, though, i'd recommend applying to lots of phd programs right off the bat. of course, funds are not unlimited and applications get expensive, so only do so if you have some qualities that set you apart from the pool of other applicants... some of these might be a strong SOP, high GPA, high GMAT/GRE, having already taken some graduate coursework, past research/publications, etc., etc...

hope this helps!
