waitlist, anyone?

I was put on a waitlist for a marketing program I applied to.

Is there anything one can do after being put on a waitlist? The school didn't ask for more information from me. Do I just sit, wait, and hope?

Anyone else waitlisted?

Another natural waiter here . No idea about what to do about it in the meantime.

Sitting on wait lists makes me wonder where there are interlocking preferences which may yield suboptimal results. If:
candidate X prefers
  • A (wait list) and
  • B (wait list) to
  • C (admit),
while candidate Y prefers
  • C (wait list) and
  • B (wait list) to
  • A (admit),
and candidate Z prefers
  • A (wait list) and
  • C (wait list) to
  • B (admit),
there may be a run up to the final deadline where none get their top choice (on the applicant side, at least). This reminds me of deadlocked threads in computing.

Maybe we should have a market like that of professional sports. A draft, a few sign-and-trade deals, the whole works.

This is what one ponders while on wait lists!

I myself am extremely happy with and grateful for my own A, B, or C, (or D, possibly) though leanings and family situation are particularly critical at the moment which make marginal differences loom large. I will be much relieved when all is resolved, hopefully for the proper benefit of all.

However, when your preferences go like this:
  • A (waitlist)
  • B (waitlist)
  • ...
  • (all in between rejects, or un-informed waitlists at best)
  • ...
  • W (admit you are not willing to attend)
Any result that yields an admission at the top two preferences is going to be sweet. Sadly, A is a top 10 school, and B is a top 15 school, taking between 1-3 students each incoming class, so I don't have a clue about my odds.

But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire."

In at Maryland and Arizona here. Very, very happy with these. Waiting on USC and UC Irvine. Leaning towards my native California for family reasons, so anyone holding admits in those two schools, please hurry! I am in I.S., but changes in other departments might affect me.

Hmm, I'm interested. How come a finance applicant refusing his/her spot might affect a candidate waitlisted in another concentration? In which way? Inquiring minds want to know......

I say "might" meaning I am speculating based on hearsay, but some schools' slots may be spread across departments, making some effect possible. But it is always good to inform once a decision is made, right?
