Question Choose between Econ and Math for phd in Finance.

Hi guys,
I am currently a master student in economics in Canada. Have got admission to U of T 's phd in econ and Waterloo University's master of computational mathematics. The waterloo's program is very math intensive but the school is not very famous in U.S. If I want to go to U.S. for Phd in Finance in top business schools next year which program will help me more? Should I stay in University of Toronto for one year or choose this one-year master program? Can you guys give me some suggestions?
Thank you.
Teatime.

I know how you feel. I did a double major in Maths and Econ and want to do finance. That's a tough question. Finance requires alot of maths but I don't know if doing the econ degree would help you more. The U of Toronto has a MFE-why didn't you apply for this instead? I would have thought the Masters in Financial Economics would have been a better option than the PhD in Econ. I would look at the courses I am doing in that year. If you choose the Masters in Computational Maths would you be pursuing courses like Financial Mathematics? I guess what I am saying is that I would measure the courses that I would be doing under the Masters to that of the first year of the PhD to see which are better suited to doing that PhD in Finance. In addition, the University of Waterloo offers Actuarial Science where you can sit in some of their finance classes. You have to consider what is your plan of action so to say before you apply

I'd say go to UT econ then transfer to UT finance... I tell you it's possible as long as you do well during the MA in economics.

Mathematics at UT offers the best program in actuarial sciences.. I am sure that from econ you can sit in some finance classes at the business school. Anyway a MA in Econ from UT is more impressive if you aim to reach a top10 in finance...

doubtful, i hate to disagree with you, but Waterloo is the most respected actuarial science program on the planet, not Toronto. in my prior life, i was a real live credentialed actuary (who didn't go to Waterloo), and i can tell you that it's the best in the world, bar none.

Hi imustpass, the thing is the program I have been accepted is Computational Mathematics not Actuarial Science.

If you do decide to stay at the University of Toronto you could sit in in some finance classes. I was thinking however that by doing a PhD there may be more time constraints on your part but you will have to look into this for yourself. See what your schedule is like in both schools and then decide what is the better option for you in terms of how to reach your goal.
