TAMU (Mays) VS Purdue (Krannert)
I would just like to attract the attention of the guys here on this forum.
I just saw on the latest US News and World rankings that TAMU is 29th and Purdue is 33rd. Now, Purdue has a very good reputation in engineering and TAMU in maths/stats. So, according to you guys would both Purdue and TAMU be considered top 30 or leaving aside the base rankings, in terms of perception, be ranked top 25? top 50? Thanks. Replies would be well appreciated !! |

Well, the tuition is very cheap !! desimba: I seem to recollect that you are from Krannert !! I am comparing Purdue MSHRM and TAMU MIS. I want use this as a stepping stone to a PhD in management/strategy. I am giving up PhD in CS from UCSC, UMD MIM and Stony Brook MS CS. Back home, I also have a choice in the Indian Statistical Institute for MS in Information Science. |

Yes, I am leaning more and more towards TAMU. Even though in both places, there are good chances to get financial aid from the second semester onwards, TAMU has almost half the tuition (6K) than Purdue (12K+). Moreover, it is closer to the big cities of Texas - better job opportunities. Also, I like the research output at TAMU. Maybe that will translate to better LORs?

You have a good memory Ancalgon. I did go to Purdue and it's fair to say that I would be biased in favor of Krannert. Having said that, none of those programs are the ideal stepping stone for a PhD in Management/ Strategy, so you won't go wrong by choosing any one over the other. The only one caveat that I would add to your previous note when you mention that being closer to the big cities of Texas would mean more job opportunities: international students on F1 visas are not allowed to work off-campus during the school year. So irrespective of whether job opportunities are available or not, you won't legally be able to take up a job. Don't let that be a factor in your decision-making process between the two schools.

What I meant was the OPT and internships as doubtful rightly pointed out. So, I guess its TAMU then.
Also, I heard that the OPT has been increased to 29 months in some special cases... anyone heard about that? |
