M.A in Economics and MBAs are not so useful towards PhD.
I advise you to go for an M.Sc or M.A in Accounting, which can contribute more to your application, when compared with MBA and Economics masters.

If you are unable to do so, try an MBA with specialization in accounting and plenty of accounting work experience is adventageous towards PhD in Accounting.

Iyi sanslar,

From what I've read, an MBA is not really a good precursor to a business PhD. The PhD programs tend to put a high value on people with strong mathematical backgrounds (at least 3 semesters of calculus, linear algebra, and probability), which you probably have coming from engineering. The most important thing for you then is probably some research experience and the recommendation letters that go with it. So I'm thinking an MA in Economics or some kind of masters in accounting (other than MBA). But I'm not an expert.

For myself, since I've been out of school for 10 years and I'm interested in a Finance PhD program, I'm going to enroll in an MS in Quantitative Finance to shore up solid LORs.
