It is known that GRE verbal does not matter much for admission into economics and finance phd programs (I guess as long as it is above 500). Is it the same story for the business econ and marketing phd admissions?

I would recommend taking the GMAT for PhD Marketing, also. A lot of the top schools claim to take either GRE or GMAT, but a lot of lower tier schools prefer (or will only accept) the GMAT.
And, if you're like me, your GMAT score will look more impressive than your GRE scores. My GRE was Q:800,V:590. My GMAT was 780. |

This is very interesting and surprising. I did not know GMAT score could come in our favor. With that GMAT you can even try some MBA programs. My main problem is that I will be giving the GRE for the econ and finance programs, and I am guessing that I will apply to very few top marketing programs, so I don't really know whether it is worth it to spend so much more on GMAT.
