Applying for both Econ & Finance to the same school?
Hi,
I will be a 4th year undergraduate this fall and applying for Ph.d. in Econ and Finance or M.a. in Econ. Let me ask you questions. Question1: Can we apply for two different disciplines(Econ and Finance) to one graduate school? Isn't it explicitly admitting that I am not 100% into either program? I don't know how the process works, but I would venture to guess that adComs would consider me not having made up my mind. Question2: I will have official degrees in Nov(graduation is in Nov.), since I need to take Summer courses on top of my 4th year course work. But I don't do anything between mid-June and Sep, so I can go to class of Ph.d. program. Do you think graduation in Nov matters? I'd appreciate your comments any thoughts. Thanks, |

I am not sure about your second question so you may have to rephrase it to get responses. As far as your first question is concerned, I know that you can rarely apply to two programs within the same school though you may be able to apply to two programs within the same university in some cases. e.g. Stanford Graduate School of Business has a PhD program in Economic Analysis & Policy and a separate program in Finance also within the business school. While you may not be able to apply to both programs at the same time, you may be apply to one of the two programs within the business school and the Economics program at Stanford which I believe is housed in their School of Arts and Sciences. Similarly at many of the other schools as well- only 1 program within one school but >1 within the same university.

My question was: Taking Summer classes and getting degree in Nov would have any effect on admission precess? Do I satisfy requirements for application? |

Yes I believe you do even though this is something you can and should check with some of the schools that you are interested in. In general, the schools require that you have completed all course work before the start of the PhD program and you have your degree in hand before the end of the first semester of the program. Since that appears to be the case, you should be fine. Nevertheless there could be the occasional school for which this would not be acceptable.

My school wants to have all the outstanding documents ( marksheets, transcripts, graduate diploma) until 31th December 2008. I am admitted to a PhD Program (Finance) for Fall 2008 in a Canadian University. It may depend on school, you should consult to the departments about this issue. Hope this helps, Best,
