Transfer to Finance Department Within B-School?

I am currently in a second-tier business school PhD program. Over the past year, I've lost interest in my major field. After taking a few courses in the finance department in my school, I think that's what I really want to study. Plus, the placement record of my department is miserable, and since my current field doesn't really open any doors in industry, I have no idea what I'm going to do if I don't secure an academic placement. On the other hand, the finance department at my school has a much better record, both in academia and industry placements.

My question is, is it possible to transfer department within the same business school if you are already in one of its PhD programs? Is it possible to transfer into the finance department? Has anybody done that before and how does one go about doing that? Or perhaps I should just quit the current program altogether?

I am very dejected. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I heard of some guys changing their major at second tier business school PhD program. That might be possible but I don't know the procedures.
