    History of Economic Thought

Does anyone consider this their field? Do major Universities teach this? If so is it considered important?

I know of no top 20 program offering History of Economic Thought as one of their fields. Some programs (I think berkeley) include a course on economic thought as part of their core classes. I know that at Stanford, Northwestern and Chicago you can take classes in Economic History and its methods.

Why do you think major programs put little emphasis on the History of the Science or methodology?

    Economists are busy learning mathematics.
It is philosopher's job to manage history of science or economics.

For the same reason that they put little emphasis on baking cookies and breeding sea-turtles: they're economists.

So I should basically put any interest in this on the back burner for a while?

Bury it deep, in the darkest crevice of your mind.

That's what I did with my interest in sea-turtles.

Mathematics is just an arcane branch of economics.

    Funny.

But what's even funnier is entire generations of macroeconomists who've never read The General Theory or microeconomists who've never opened a Principles book, even the Wealth of Nations, in their lives.
