Brilliant. I keep telling my family this, and they don't seem to understand. They are also perplexed as to why I'd ever consider going to Minnesota (I am from the Texas heat originally).

Re: this thread. If I were you, italos, I would borrow the money. But if money were a consideration, I'd eliminate Stanford. Beyond the application fee, Palo Alto is the most expensive place to live in the United States. No joke.

    ^^More expensive than Manhattan? Wow.

I applied to Stanford myself, though I'm not very hopeful about it.

Doesn't Stanford have pretty nice on campus housing?

Would that help cut living costs in Palo Alto?

When your yearly stipend is over $30K, the housing cost really shouldn't matter. On 30K, even in Bay Area, you can make very very comfortable living, eat out all the time, and afford nice vacation trips. To put things into perspective, people make the ends meet in Palo alto and Berkeley on only 20K per year just fine.

I believe Stanford funds everyone they admit, and they fund them quite generously, so this shouldn't be an issue.

I seem to remember Stanford offering a ~$37k stipend only in the first year. Funding after that was similar to other schools.

I'm not questioning whether it is feasible to live on. Just curious if Stanford's university housing made it easier to live in Palo Alto.

What's so great about Palo Alto? Why is it that expensive?

Hmm.. the old bait-and-switch. Someone should report Stanford to the California Department of Consumer Affairs.

Remember applicants: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

We got 36k at Yale and it is not expensive here. All I can say is, its true... and its damn good!

I'm sure you will be fine at Stanford with 37k although in real terms its probably like 20-25k somewhere else.
