    grad funding... so clueless.

    Hi all,

I am so clueless when it comes to grad school.

Can someone who has some idea give me their 2 cents, can I get some decent funding in a top school in the US (or get in for that matter), or Canada with a 4.0 ish GPA on a 4.3 scale and honours in economics?

    thanks.

as far as i understand it, any top program will fund you extremely well once you are in. this may less be true of schools below, say, top 10, and some public universities.

i'm not an expert, but specific info on coursework, research experience, and LORs would be helpful.

Spend 2 days searching through the last 2 years worth of threads on this forum. I am extremely doubtful there is a single question you could have that hasn't already been answered here. Also, see my signature for a starting point also, even if it doesn't apply 100% directly to you.

how much is funding offers for a typical Canadian school for MA?
so far, I have been hearing $10-16k for being a TA and research assistant.

Depends on the school and the person. Toronto (for the Doctoral Stream) offered up to $23K to domestic students I believe. Most other schools offer less. (exception maybe UWO who makes funding offers on a case-by-case basis it seems). e.g Queen's 18K (domestic), UBC like 16K?

At UBC, if you get 'full' funding, which about 1/3 of the MA class do (I count full funding as at least a two semester TAship). It ranges from $10.5k to around $18.5, with most towards the lower end of the scale. You have to take fees off this though (-$5k). IMO even the top end of the scale is not sufficient to live well on for a year but you could survive. A place to live will consume about $8k over the year.
