Argh! How can I get into economics?!?

I am applying to all kinds of research assistant or data analyst jobs, but getting no responses! I don't get it...it seems like if you don't have a master's you can't even get a econ job...there is nothing entry level I can find. I don't know, might be different if you went to any Ivy league, but that is what I have found. I put my high GPA on my resume, list of intensive math classes, computer skills, experience with STATA, but I'm getting nada! Does anyone have any advice? The one thing I don't like about econ is it seems it is a very snobbish field...("oh, you went to Haaaaarvard?")

Dude, it's a recession. There's not much to do besides keep plugging away. Hopefully you'll find something.

I was in a similar situation as you. I was looking for research assistant jobs, but I stopped when I got my first funded offer. I applied to a lot of places, and I didn't get any interviews (except from the Fed recently). So if you haven't applied to the Fed, you should try.

Are you graduating this semester? Because, I think part of the reason I didn't get more interviews was that many of the jobs were looking for people to start immediately, and I couldn't start for six months (June was six months away at the time). So if you're graduating, just keep applying. I think you have a better chance of getting a job when you are closer to the date which you can start.

Also, as a diversification strategy, I would apply to some summer internship programs. With that under your belt, you'll be in a better position to get a job in the fall.

A lot of these RA jobs at government institutions have arlready hired for next year (they usually want apps by the end of January).
I work at the St Louis Fed, and we hired 4 new people for next summer, but all were hired by beginning of February.

I hear you, OP. Best you can do is keep applying to different institutions and hope for a hit. Then proceed to hit the interview out of the park.

It's a recession so tons of people who'd otherwise gone to Wall St/Ibanking are applying for research positions. I don't know how to advise you other than to keep trying.

You think it's this? These positions are generally reserved for students who are interested in econ in some capacity...
