    Applying to heterodox programs

What are my chances of getting into:

    Umass
    Utah
    UMKC M.A.
    New School
    Riverside
    Denver M.A.
    (any other schools?)

    PROFILE:
Type of Undergrad: Big Ten, BS Statistics, BA Sociology
Undergrad GPA: 3.33 (3.4 Statistics, 4.0 Sociology, some bad engineering and early math grades, 3.83 for final 60 credit hours)
    Type of Grad: -
    Grad GPA: -
    GRE: 560 V, 670 Q, 3.5 AW
    Math Courses:
    Calc 2,3,4 (A,C,C)
    Diff Eq (C)
Linear Algebra (F first time, A second)
    Graduate Regression and ANOVA (B)
    Graduate Design of Experiments (A)
    Graduate SAS programming (A)
    Prob Theory (B)
    Stat Theory (B)
Econ Courses: Intermediate Micro and Macro (A,A)
Other Courses: lots of macro-level sociology stuff
Letters of Recommendation: from two Marxist sociologists and one economist
Research Experience: environmental political economy research project in sociology, two years as a SAS programmer
Teaching Experience: Math tutoring one semester
Research Interests: Political economy, labor, environment
    SOP: I'm good at statements
Other: I read a lot on my own. I think my sociology and math background point right to heterodox econ.

    RESULTS:
    Acceptances: -
    Waitlists: -
    Rejections: -
    Pending: -

What would you have done differently? I wish I would not have screwed up three semesters of engineering and math. Otherwise my transcript is spotless. I'll probably retake the GRE. I didn't study the first time, so I should do better I think.

my honest advice would be to try to apply to a sociology/economic sociology program instead. with your quantitative record, you won't get into a good economics program but could cut it at a relatively ok-ly ranked sociology places, if you're into ideas rather than techniques. you'll still be able to take classes in economics. i'd give it a shot at 30% ec places, but would send 70% of your applications to sociology programs, and i guess you'll be happier there anyway and you may get into a much better place for that field.

i recommended some along these lines for a similar case

    Attending: U-Virginia($!!)

    In: U-Virginia($!!), U-Florida($?), Boston College($!), Michigan State($!)
    Out: Duke, Northwestern, U-Penn, U-Michigan, U-Maryland, NYU, U-Texas-Austin, U-Wisconsin(notified may27th), Cornell

Your engineering grades shouldn't matter much at Riverside. I made 6 or 7 C's in various engineering courses (I majored in mechanical) and still was accepted with a fellowship.

    but:

"Our average incoming student has a GPA of 3.6 and GRE scores of 620 verbal and 760 quantitative. Students receiving funding generally score higher in all areas than our average students. We offer funding to about 25% of our incoming Ph.D. students each year (5-10 students). Funding is awarded in the form of graduate assistantships, with stipends ranging from $8,000-12,500 and tuition waivers for 18 credit hours per academic year."

slim chance, i'd say? it's still quantitatively competitive? the thread opener has many Cs in math courses, and a GRE Q of 670.

"economics", sorry but economics is about ideas, not techniques. Math is just a tool, not a goal. Remember your introduction to econ book.

so even if you get into any of the schools you list, why wouldn't you apply to sociology programs that are ranked highly?

sure, but admissions is not only about ideas

for poli sci, sociology and econ you need ideas, but poli sci and sociology don't care about whether you'll be good at quantitative techniques?

Are you trying to get into a heterodox program because your math grades are low or because you believe in heterodox (or perhaps, more aptly, disbelieve in orthodox) methoss?

My first thought is a sociology program with some economics research is your best bet...
