On the non-Economics Department info to expect, I called into financial aid and was told that for folk who completed fafsa, to expect more fun forms to fill out in May. All that will be posted to My UCSC. |

Speaking of housing applications...anybody familiar with the University Inn? Specifically of pros and cons? I like the fact that it's downtown, so you get a little bit of the city and a bit of the school, but I fear it may be too loud with all the students. And the lack of a kitchen might irk me after a while. But it would only be for a year, and finding housing 3,000 miles away is not going very well.

I can't choose housing without seeing it. I had really crappy apartment when I did my MA (even though I did see the place but decided to just go with cheapest option), and I am not taking any chances on that now. I am hoping that one week is enough to find housing once I arrive, or at least it is in most university towns...
So that email that got sent out, it looks like there is about 30 of us... and the math camp syllabus doesn't look too bad, though I don't want to get ahead of myself, but all this math is from my MA...but that was 2 years ago. |

How many will enroll at last? If too many, the supply of RA TA funding will be short. It means that some students may be kicked after qual exam, which seems to have been rare in UCSC, or may get into second grade without funding. That would be horrible in any case. What do you guys think about it?

I think a couple of people may decide not to enroll, but that's about it. As far as funding is concerned, my guess is it will probably be tighter. But since the department itself was shocked at the number of acceptances, they probably haven't even figured out what it will mean. I'm optimistic it will turn out to be a good thing, even if we're packed in an office like sardines.

LaCroix,
The University Inn isn't right downtown. It's about a 10 minute walk to the bus station (and is over the bridge). I think that most people would consider "downtown Santa Cruz" the other side of the bridge. Can be a bit of a main in the *** if you're carrying groceries home (not on a convenient bus route). How much is the University Inn charging? I think that the best thing to do is sublet until the end of September. You're not locked into anything, and will find something for sure. Look, for certain, there will be empty rooms at Grad housing. Alot of people are moving out due to rent increases. (Rooms were empty for the entire 2008-9 year). |
