I'll be attending UCSC in the fall and am hoping to find decent off-campus housing. I've lived on my own too long and think grad housing would drive me a little nuts. I'm seriously considering St. George Residences, which TBK was so kind to link to...but generally it's a little hard because I can't get out to Santa Cruz beforehand and have to rent sight unseen.

Any ladies here looking to rent?
I'm looking to rent out my share of the FSH apartment (larger bedroom) for some or all of July-September. (I'll be returning in October). Monthly Rent = $650 +utilities (~$20) + some negotiable deposit. I live with another girl who will be entering the 4th year of the phd program. If you're interested, PM me and I can send you some photos. Bedroom: NEW Queen size bed, large closet, dresser, large desk/chair Shared bathroom with other roommate Upstairs: Full kitchen, living room and kitchen table, balcony. Utilities include water, electricity, internet, and landline telephone. Unfortunately, FSH doesn't allow pets. I'm planning to advertise via email to all the incoming grad students after April 15th. Thought i'd give a heads-up. |

I'll have a car, so I'm definitely considering living in the forest (i.e. Felton). Those residences that TBK mentioned also look nice, but so far I haven't been pleased with the housing available in Santa Cruz proper. I still plan on making friends with someone with a beach house while I'm there--that would be my preference! BTW, have any of you checked out the History of Consciousness PhD? The classes look amazing. |

I was just looking at some Craigslist ads, and some of these places seriously look like you need a gun to live there or something. I mean I am excited to have a beach nearby and all, but some of this looks to be in the middle of nowhere.
I hope by the time I seriously look, there will be real apartments available that cost less than 1500 to rent. Of course my search turned up less options since I searched dog friendly ads only. |

There seems to be some concern about finding housing here. I will be moving to UCSB in the middle of June, and I thought I would offer my place. It is seriously the best place for the money that you will find in Santa Cruz. 800 square feet, 1 bedroom for $950 (although the rent may go up a teeny bit cuz I've had the place for 2.5 years). 4 rooms, 3 of them are big. Huge living room, large bedroom, and excellent kitchen (newer fridge, newer stove/range, place for kitchen table, and a HUGE pantry with many shelves). Upstairs unit in a 10-unit complex, the landlords are awesome. They fix things right away, and are always very nice. They're Irish, so they're fun to listen to too. Balcony out back that doesn't get much sun, but it is palacial. You cannot go wrong if you are looking for a 1 bedroom in the $1000 range. Oh, the other residents are generally very quiet.
Downsides: somewhat close to Highway 1, so there is some noise, but it is nothing like living next to the 5. You don't hear any noise at night. It is on a slightly busy street (Grant St.), so there is always a little bit of traffic, but it is not bothersome. PM me if you want to see what the inside is like, I should have some pictures on my comp. Or I can take some if you like, it's no trouble. Oh, one more thing. There are HUGE windows in the kitchen/living room, that let in MUCHO light, they are south-facing. Your view is the park across the street, so you see only redwoods because it is the upstairs unit. This place is a STEAL. Good luck. Edit: If you are in town to visit UCSC at any point, I will show the place to you.

I was reading some info about the graduate school at UCSC and it stated somewhere that graduate students must pay some grad-fees of around USD 300+. I was wondering, do you guys know if these $300 are per quarter or per academic year? Also, any clue what these fees are for?
Thanks! |
