constrainedoptimizer is on the way!
Waiting to hear back from one more school, but I got a nice funding package from them awhile ago, so I am still considering the banana slug route.

I had an offer a while ago from UCSC but without funding. Yet, I am waiting for two schools that I know I am waitlisted. If I will not be able to get any offers from them, I will go there. Thus still waiting.....

Those of you who got funding, how much did you guys get? My offer was 22.5k, and if I understand it correctly, my out of state tuition would be about 24k.

unitroot radiates success.
UC Santa Cruz has probably the most beautiful surroundings of all UC campuses. I think someone posted a review of the first year at UCSC here.

Anybody planning on visiting UCSC? I don't think they have official visit day though. So have to pay out of pocket money.

too much money to for me to pay out of pocket... but it would be nice to see the dept and the town.

does anyone know how UCSC is ranked currently for econ? has it moved up since the 2004 econ phd rankings? while i like the idea of doing int'l econ, my concern would be that the program is pretty new and possibly less established.

I'm going to attend UCSC. I've also visited the campus on my own time and money. Some impressions:

Lottery!!!--Incredible campus location. I've always been familiar with CA's Central Coast, but the scenery is still stunning. The campus is a labyrinth, in a redwood forest, on a bluff, overlooking a marine sanctuary. It's an hour from the City if you have a car. The city of Santa Cruz is amazing. Big city amenities in a beautiful coastal paradise. Expensive as hell, but beautiful and diverse (just not diverse in political ideology).

Cohorts are small (like 10 students), a reflection of the specific focus of the department. This is especially awesome if you are interested in international monetary economics, as you will have an enormous amount of research options. Most students receive funding, since the competition is limited. The attrition rate is low and the atmosphere is extremely collegial (even between the international students). The faculty just want you to pass your prelims and see decent research. They don't stress course work performance (unless you need the non-resident tuition fellowship).

Carl Walsh is both humble and encouraging.

I'm really excited. The fit is exceptional, especially since I'm more interested in multilateral policy work than academia.
