    LSE Postgrad Diploma?

    Hello,

I just discovered I could take classes online towards a postgraduate diploma from the London School of Economics even though I live in the US. I'd be interested in economics or international development diploma.

Anyone complete a postgrad diploma or know anything about it? (Especially how challenging, is it respected, does it open doors for you?)

Me: I am coming from an engineering background so I would be stepping out of my field while working fulltime.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks

Do you mean the postgrad diploma through the University of London External System?

In many senses, yes it does because for certain programs LSE is in control of the curriculm at LES:

LSE is responsible for the academic direction of eighteen undergraduate degrees, the Diploma in Economics and Diploma in Social Sciences for External students, Diplomas for Graduates and the Access route available from the University of London External System. LSE External Study

I inquired directly with LSE several years back and they acknowledged that the diploma could be used for direct entry into LSE but it does not guarantee direct entry (of course). As was my situation then, for someone entering back into academia from a professional career, I believe it is one of the many options that should be considered!

Ecomania, thanks for the input. How did you end up transitioning from career to academia?

Be mindful that the diploma you want is the Diploma for Graduates, not the standard diploma.

So far so good . I considered the diploma as my last option and thankfully I was able to make the transition without resorting to my last option. I was accepted into a respected full time program in Europe which I completed last year.

I was interested in using the Diploma for entry into an Economics related program from LSE because I had been working full time for several years and my undergrad isn't in Economics. This was the response from the recruitment office:
We would accept the Diploma as an entry requirement to either the MSc
Economics or MSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics. However, You may also choose to apply for the MSc Economics two year programme for those without a background in Economics.

Interesting, I wonder how comparable your odds of getting into the MSc with the Postgrad Diploma are to your odds of progression via the 2 year course. If they're similar it would save you several thousand pounds
