    ? number of PhDs produced per year - 900 only??

    two recent sources:

    "U.S. universities will grant only 950 Ph.D.'s in economics [in 2009]."

    For Economists, a Moment in the Sun - US News and World Report

    "Each year about 900 new PhDs are produced by approximately 100 schools in the U.S."
    http://community.middlebury.edu/%7Ec...omistfinal.pdf

    ======

    wow - i'd have expected the top20 to produce, say, 20 each, makes 400 already... what about the rest? 900 phds per year are SO few! anyone else surprised?

    Sounds good... I'm a bit surprised, but I think it is reasonable that the ranked 21-100 schools might only average 6-7 students per year.

    I think the further down you go, the smaller the department.

    I think I remember hearing somewhere that there are PhD granting departments outside the US as well. If this is true, then the fact that US schools produce about 900 becomes a little less meaningful.

    yes, that is probably true. and the LACs don't grant PhDs, etc. i wonder whether they count business economics people, or public policy, or finance phds, etc

    anyway, that's pretty good news - and probably explains the high salaries - the universities don't adjust the supply of degrees in response to demand.

    Okay, not 21-100, it's not that clear cut. Just say below 30-35.

    that won't do. if 35 average 20 per cohort, then we'd have already 700, and only 200 for the remaining 36-100, which are 2.5 per program only!

    i'd buy into the hypothesis small number of phds from the 21-100 programs, but we should check somehow?

    You should also take into account the numbers of doctorate degrees granted outside the US from schools better than the 30+ US range .In any case if we are just interesting in the general number it is certainty much higher than 900

    Although the ranking data in this paper has been attacked fairly heavily, there's a category "average Ph.D. graduates 2002-2007" for all of the US doctoral granting institutions. No ARE, Business, Finance or PubPolicy programs included, just pure econ. This ranking is my personal favorite for fairly obvious reasons...

    It seems that outside the top 15-20, average Ph.D.s granted/yr falls between 3-12ish, roughly. I bet someone could add em all up...
