Sorry for that, and my sincere apologizes! Frankly, I would have associated lizette with neither gender, but now that you say it, it makes sense to me. So again, sorry. Anyways, congrats to your admit and a good time in Princeton!

What you say is certainly true, but while HU or FU Berlin have one or two good people, Frankfurt, Mannheim or Bonn have some ten people on that level.
I did not imply that any university in Berlin is on par with these places, rather that they are not as bad as claimed here (I would also say it is on equal footing with Frankfurt). Some of the professors (and not only one or two) are really well-connected, which matters a lot in terms of placement.

I don't understand your reasoning. The fact the everybody used to get a master's in Germany implies the opposite. The master's selection process works out as a filter. Removing the filter imposes the free flow of some problematic subjects.
The point is that these programs were intended to prepare you for scientific work, i.e. a PhD. When you come out, you are supposed (or at least, have been) to be capable of writing a dissertation. Since five years of courswork overall is a rather tight schedule for this purpose, your first-year economics courses typically are what is considered as intermediate level in the US. It might also help in that regard that people usually come out of high school with much more math skills than in the US, on average.

Sorry for digging up a little bit old post. But I do not want to start a new post with similar topics.
Is there anyone who applied to German schools this year?
If so, do you get any answer from them?

Maybe a bit late, but I applied for the PhD programs at Mannheim and Munich with a MSc in Economics from Warwick (without having the final results, should be around 70%), got accepted into Munich with a full scholarship without asking for it (1100€ a month, reckon you won't starve on that). I guess that Mannheim turned me down partly because my research interests (Public Economics and Political Economy) aren't really taught there.

No, don't apologize! I did not discover it before and it was the most funny discussion I've ever read... Thanks!

For anyone else who wants to know what's wrong with Germany and Economics I highly recommend this: Methodology

Cheers,

I got somewhat surprised that this thread is coming up!!(And I got an email)
As a possible candidate for Ph.D this year, I really welcome new inputs. I might revise my view on German schools after carefully observing them. (Now, I prefer Frankfurt and Mannheim to Bonn) Nowadays, Frankfurt seems very active in hiring profs. They hired two Harvard faculties last year. Furthermore, 1/3 of newly accepted and more than a half of last year accepted students are international students, which seems to be very plausible. Mannheim also looks they are trying to hire some (both students and professors) from international market. While Bonn seems to stay the same. Only a few of pd.d students are from abroad. Most of their faculties are either German and/or German graduated. They might be refused to be internationalised. However, Bonn is still considered the best in Germany and has a competitive advantage in the job market. (I am in Germany, so I could be biased toward German reputations.)
If you have nay inside infos in German schools, let me know. If you also interested in German schools, then I will try to put more infos here.

I was just investigating about IHS Vienna and figured this might fit into this thread. Does anybody know something about their MSc Economics programme? According to their description, they seem to be quite focussed on metrics and empirical work. Their placement record for PhD programmes mentions a few top places (namely Princeton and LSE).

Does anybody know about their reputation and their courses?

Edit: Just figured that a link might be helpful ht tp://ww w.ihs.ac.at /index.php3?id=1250 (please remove blanks - i'm not yet allowed to post links)

To further the German resurgence on this forum () Munich now has a Graduate Level Programme involving students having the opportunity to study at a US Top 5 for up to a year (fully funded).

I thought that Studying abroad is possible via "Bavarian Graduate Programme". Is it also possible to stay abroad once you enter the school directly though Munich graduate programme? Are they organizing the schools like under Bavarian network? If so, it looks very attractive given their programme is only 3-year-long.
