If your e-mail described funding for years 2-5 (something like "students in good standing are eligible for teaching or research assistantships in years 2-5") then the implication is that you were not offered funding for the first year. If the e-mail didn't say anything about funding at all, then funding decisions may be coming separately.

Also, as I've said many times before, the initial offers are not the final offers. Funding is reallocated as some students decline their offers and as the admissions committee learns more about the potential incoming students and is able to match them with fellowships tied to specific demographic or research interest criteria.

My initial offer from U-Mich did not include funding. I was offered full and generous funding after my visit, before the April 15 deadline. If you are seriously interested in attending, you should attend the flyout and be honest with the DGS and other administrators about your situation.
    This is very encouraging info!

    Congrats, MorgieLilly and finalweek!
I got the email from Michigan as well! I'm so excited. I am offered the Regents Fellowship (a stipend of $17,500 for the first year, and at least $16,000 for years two through four). The letter says we can work as research assistants in the summer to make some extra money.

I'm afraid I won't be able to attend the flyout. Wish you two good luck in getting the first year funding!

Based on MorgieLilly's post on the Decisions thread, it seems like an offer with partial funding, consisting of a tuition waiver and health care but no stipend for first year. This is distinct from a completely unfunded offer, which does not include a tuition waiver. I'm not privy to the applications or funding process, so I don't know what types of offers were made, but in past years not all offers included tuition waivers.

It was personal in the sense that it spelled out the particulars of my individual offer, but I think the letter was created from a template.

Yes, that's what it is. I wrote Mary Braun a quick e-mail and she explained this. What is the correct short-term for this kind of offer? I will use that in the future.

Shorthand term? I'd just say that the department is hedging its bets against you not passing their prelims and being able to continue onto a second year...
