This might be sort of directed at asquare. But I was wondering, does anyone know what the "itinerary" is for the Michigan flyout? All I know is that it's on March 19. Is there anything the night before or the night of the 19th, or is everything during the day?
Accepted: Michigan (no $), UCSD (TA $) /// Waitlisted: Minnesota /// Rejected: Harvard, MIT, Chicago, Princeton, Stanford, Berkeley, Yale, Northwestern, Penn, Columbia, NYU, UCLA, Wisconsin, Caltech, Brown, Cornell, Duke, PSU, Stanford GSB, Chicago Booth /// Uncomfortable Silence: CMU, Maryland, BU, Texas

This is all the information I have (from my admissions letter):

-"The program begins at 9am and lasts through 5pm."
-"The Department has an arrangement with the Fairfield Inn, Ann Arbor, to direct pay for your lodging, however you are responsible for making your hotel reservation and travel arrangements." (note: I'm not sure if this is for everyone, but posting in case it's helpful.)
-"Along with paying for your hotel room, we are happy to provide up to $300 for travel reimbursement." (note: Again, I'm not sure this is for everyone admitted.)

I've e-mailed Mary Braun to ask whether we can stay in the hotel for both the 18th and the 19th, or just the 18th or the 19th. I am waiting to hear back.

Hope this is sort of helpful.

    Thanks, MorgieLilly!
Were these details written in the pdf attachment you got? I ask because there's not even a word about flyout in my admissions letter. International students are not invited?

It must be because you are international, because you got more funding than I did. I would assume they would have wanted to pay for you to fly there over me, unless they believe that there is no way you could get a ticket for under 300 dollars. I'm domestic. My tickets are under 300 dollars. That's my best guess.

Maybe you should e-mail Mary to ask? Did you want to attend the flyout? I know a lot of international students don't, unless they are currently schooling in the US.

I do want to visit the school before I make my decision. I hear a lot about the harsh winters in Ann Arbor, don't know if I can get used to the weather there. But you are right, there's no way I can get a ticket for under 300 dollars. It will be very expensive and time-consuming. So I'm hesitating.

I was also wondering, can econ students take courses in the business school and have someone from the business school as one of their advisors? I found there're not many people doing IO in the econ department, but there're some really good people doing IO in the business school. (I emailed Mary about this, but she seems to be too busy to reply my email these days. Maybe asquare can answer this? Thanks in advance!)

    Hi Guys

I just checked wolverine access and it says I've been recommended for admission! No email or postal letter yet though!

Just wondering, do you think this is a confirmed admit or more like a 'now rackham can decide....' ?

I don't know much about what the weather is like either, but I have been using this link: Monthly Weather Forecast for Ann Arbor, MI - weather.com

I think that asquare responded to this question with a "yes" at some point previously, but I cannot find it now. I think that he also said you are required to have someone not from economics on your dissertation committee. Apologies if I've remembered this wrong.

Yes, you can take classes in the business school, and you can have a business school professor (or two!) on your committee. As you note, that's what students who do IO usually do. Michigan isn't as deep in IO as in other fields, but recent hires should help. In addition to the business school classes, Brian McCall teaches a very popular structural estimation class and some recent junior hires do IO as well.
