Decline Your Missouri-Columbia Offer if you have a better one, Pls !!!

    Hello Folks:
If you have a funded offer from Missouri-Columbia, PhD (Econ), and also have a better funded offer, and you do know you would eventually DECLINE the Missouri offer, could you kindly do that asap?? I have an unfunded offer from there and quite nervous now.

    Thank you, fellow TMers!

    Cheers

Please respect everyone's need to make a careful decision about which PhD program to attend. People deciding between multiple offers need time to attend flyouts, gather information about the schools they are considering, and speak to their advisors. TM shouldn't be used to pressure them to make decisions before they are comfortable. This is a stressful time for everyone who has applied for PhD programs, and people need to make decisions they are comfortable with and that are best for themselves.

    Why ?

I see that if everybody on the wait-list post a thread like this then it will be a mess. However, I believe that people should decline their offers if they have an offer which they strictly prefer.

It's not so much the mess in the forums (we'll have endless "should I choose X or Y" threads in the next few weeks!), but it's simply not fair to pressure people who are trying to decide between schools. They should not be made to feel responsible for someone else's outcomes, but should be comfortable making the best decisions for themselves, without added stress.

In general , I agree. However, I know lots of stupid people who has several offers in their hands. They know for sure that they will not go to University X, however with no reason they don't decline the offer of University X.

I really hate this kind of people and it is very sad that there are several selfish people like that !

You won't convince them by just writing this post.
    It's tough, isn't it?

Just because the decision would be obvious to you doesn't mean that it is obvious to other people, when real decisions are on the line. That doesn't make those people stupid. Getting all of the information and taking time to consider the options isn't stupid and it isn't selfish; pushing people to make decisions that they aren't ready to make is selfish. When people have decided for sure not to attend a school, then common courtesy dictates informing the school. However, admissions aren't even finished yet. Lots of people are still waiting to hear about final admissions and funding decisions. Flyouts haven't started for most schools. It's still very early in the process. Ultimately, the April 15 deadline exists to force people to choose eventually, and to create a level playing field for everyone.

    Thanks asquare.

To the op and causal effect, these type of threads merely pressure people into making rash decisions which they may regret. If someone knows they aren't going to a school, then they will decline that offer, if they know they aren't going and still do not decline that offer, then they are beyond rational reasoning.

Someone may be 99.9% certain they are not going to school x, but until they have accepted and had receipt confirmation of school y's offer, you cannot expect them to take care of the declinations. There are too many other important things to review to ensure they are making the right decision for them. Give them a break.

Lastly, you may think this type of thread is harmless, but it is inciteful and goes against the spirit and intention of the forum. We are here to support, not pressure, one another.

What I mean is that there is no sense to keep you NCSU offer in hand while you have an offer from Upenn ... I believe that it is not ethical... One o my friend last year had accepted an offer from a top 20-30 university and then on 16th April, he got a funded offer from top 10 which he was on the waitlist before. However, he couldn't renege other offer and he missed the chance to study at his dream school.

Anyway, we are not on the same line about this issue....

    Good Luck to everyone
