Two questions for UMich entering class of this year
The first is: what's $2,000-a-month's life like in Ann Arbor? I'm an international student so I don't have any concept.
The second is: (since I'm not at econ depart., so this is for econ admits) Does the Econ Department have the official start time and schedule for Math Camp (ECON 600) now? Thank you very much for your answers!

Not an entering UMich, but here is some information that may address your questions.
With respect to the budget, how much will your housing be? That's usually the largest single fixed monthly cost, so it's usually most helpful to consider after-housing income. If you're just renting a room for a few hundred a month, then your $2000 will go a lot further than if you're renting your own apartment and paying your own utilities. Ann Arbor is about average for cost-of-living in the US. Income per capita is about $30k/yr (which includes the university student population) and median household income is $50k/yr, so you will be on the lower end of the economic spectrum if your stipend is $24k. It's doable, but things will be very, very tight (as it is for most grad students). As for ECON 600, it starts on 08/20/09. http://www.lsa.umich.edu/UMICH/econ/...cheduleweb.pdf |

You may also find parts of this UMich Econ "survival guide" helpful.

Life on $2000/month is pretty good -- that's actually a slightly higher-than-average stipend for econ students at U-Mich. Rent for a one bedroom apartment is between $600 and $900, depending on where you live. You can buy lunch for $4 to $7, and bring it from home much less expensively. There are restaurants in all price ranges for dinners out. There are cheap movie theaters, cheap bars, all of the expected amenities of a college town. There isn't an expensive club scene or anything.
So long as you don't have outstanding obligations (debt, dependents to support, something like that) and you don't go on ridiculous shopping sprees, you can certainly live perfectly comfortable on $2000/month. You can afford to live alone if you want to, you can have a cell phone and cable TV/internet, and you can go out for dinner now and then. I hope that's what you are looking for. If you have more specific questions, let me know. Welcome to town! |
