PROFILE:
Type of Undergrad: Bachelors in Electronics Engineering (India) from a top 50 college (there are thousands of them here but yeah, no IIT or REC) Undergrad GPA: 75% (top 5% in the class) Type of Grad: MBA (IIM - B-school in India) Grad GPA: 6.4/10 (top 15% of the class) GRE: Not taken yet. Expect to score 780-800Q and 600V Math Courses: Lot of calculus, probability and statistical courses in under-grad, basically engineering. math. ( above 70% in all of them). Statistical, number theory and optimization research courses at grad school (B+) Econ Courses: Micro (B), Macro (B+) and Business Economics (useless) Other Courses: None Letters of Recommendation: None . Two Eco profs from b-school - unsure about type of letter of reference; have been out of academia for 5 years now. Planning to intern with some Profs to earn one.Research Experience: Working as a RA now for the last few months Teaching Experience: None Research Interests: Development Eco statement of purpose: Thinking of explaining my interest in eco, my strong craving to get back in academia and work on math/eco problems again. Concerns: Poor Eco grades + no letter of reference. I suck at getting cosy with Profs and there's hardly anyone who goes to academia from my institutions. Also, I need funding. Yeah, so lot of reasons for me to be concerned. Other: Work experience in the development sector for the last two+ years working on the field for some time. Applying to: Around 5 with good eco departments - brown, berkeley, ubc, harvard and lse. Suggestions please on whether this looks reasonable! |

Type of Undergrad: Triple Major (Econ, Math, Stat - all B.S.) from large public university with top 10 econ, top 20 math Undergrad GPA: 3.75/4 Type of Grad: Grad GPA: GRE: 800Q, 570V, 4.5AWA Math Courses: Calculus I-IV, (HS,HS, B+, B+), Intro to Stat I-II (A,A-), Linear Algebra (A-), Intro to Proofs (A-), Real Analysis I-II (A-,A), Prob & Stat I-II (A,A), Math Modeling (A), Prediction & Filtering (A), Multivariate Stat (A-), Numerical Methods (A-), phd Real Analysis (B,B), phd Time Series (A-), phd Probability & Measure theory (Fall/Spring) Econ Courses: Principles of Micro (A), Principles of Macro (A), Game Theory (A-), Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Macro (A), Econometrics (A-), International Trade (A), Macro Policy (A), Mathematical Econ (A), phd Micro I-IV (A,B,B,A-), phd Macro (Fall/Spring), phd Trade (Fall/Spring) Other Courses: C/C++ (A-), Algorithms & Data Structures (A-) Letters of Recommendation: 1 amazing letter from a very well known researcher, 1 really good from a newer tenure track prof, and 1 not sure from a decently well known researcher - may change this last one though; I have a lot of options and I haven't talked to him for 2 years... Research Experience: -Doing summer research and honors thesis in international trade (working with the Melitz model) -Helping a grad student in Education with stats for his dissertation (they're allowed to do that + he pays me). I'm doing a lot of factor analysis and structural equation modeling; not stuff you see in econ very often if ever, but I have pretty much full control over the empirical side of his study. I'll get coauthor out of any articles he publishes based on what I helped with. Teaching Experience: None Research Interests: Trade, Macro, Growth, Development statement of purpose: not started yet Concerns: Some kind of low grades in places, especially this last year in my grad classes. All the classes were actually fairly easy and I understood all the material really well and did excellent on all of the homework, but I would mess up on exams because I didn't have time to prepare (work + too many classes) and the tests emphasized memorization over problem solving. Other: I'm trying to go to the same school or same area as my girlfriend (she does architecture); but our school is pretty weak in architecture so she has less options. I passed the micro prelim on my first try. I took it partly as a signal that I actually do understand the material fine despite my grades and in case I stay at the same school so I don't have to take it again. Applying to: MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Chicago, Stanford, Minnesota, Yale, Berkeley, Northwestern, Columbia, Penn, UCLA. |
