Ah I had replied but my reply got lost.
JohnMcClane: I am interested in empirical development and don't know what places good for theory in trade or political economy. As for other areas of micro-theory widely used in development, of course game theory. However, I don't know how much game theory is applicable to developing countries (or applicable to anything at all for that matter). I get the impression that contract theory is overall a more applied field than game theory, but I don't know if this is true. Perhaps someone who knows could comment. I didn't think of this earlier, but behavioural economics seems like another good field for someone interested in development theory. I am assuming you have read these exchange of views: [ahh- I can't posts links, search for " New Directions in Development Economics: More Theory or More Empirics" in google]. Several people mentioned the increasing importance of behavioural economics type models in development. z109620: I agree in part and think that human capital is certainly by far the most common research topic in micro-development today. I geuss it is much more tractable than a lot of other important topics. Aid, however, I don't think is such a big topic in professional literature (it is more common in general audience economics literature) and the research is more macro than micro. |

z109620: Thanks for the input. I am not really interested in relocating to London, so I guess I will take a pass on LSE. As per the current state of development, I am sad that development theory is not too big nowadays as that is what I am most interested in. Anyways, my prof today was telling me that esther duflo may soon win the nobel prize ...
good_tea: Thanks for pointing me to the article New Directions ... it was very interesting ... Like BBM, I am very skeptic of applied econometrics ... even with respect to micro ... however ... randomnization trials seems to make sense ... I can see how randomnization may create concrete understanding regarding development issues ... but oh well ... are you currently in a phd program? |
