![]() Type of Undergrad: B.S. Econ or Math in a top 60 school, I can choose either one, it is really not a matter Undergrad GPA: 3.6, 3.9 from my freshman university, I transferred. Type of Grad: NA Grad GPA: NA GRE: 790Q, 330V, 5.0AWA Math Courses: Calculus 1(A), 2(A), 3(C+), 4(A), Math Proof(A), Real Analysis I(A), Linear Algebra 1(A), 2(A), Mathematical Probability (A), will take Real Analysis 2, Linear Optim, Math Statistics, Probability 2, Numerical Analysis (schools will not see these grades) Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intermediate Micro(A) and Macro(A), Game Theory(A), Econometrics 1(A), 2(A) Other Courses: A 5.5 credits grad course of independent study in sociology and education (A) Letters of Recommendation: 2 econ professors (1 Yale PhD, 1 Northwestern PhD) 3rd one is an education professor who I took the grad course with, UPenn phd in education, I also have fourth letter either from a econ professor Northwestern phd or a education professor (but she does research in Education of Econ, phd from Columbia) Research Experience: one year education RA, had a good conference paper with professor in education, 2 semesters econ thesis, 1 semester independent study for a non-econ and math subject. Teaching Experience: Peer Mentor in Calculus 1, some tutoring experience Research Interests: Labor economics (especially in education), applied econometrics, game theory Concerns: I had a very bad semester where the C+ occurred. But other than that I did all well. That semester is also the first semester at my new school and I had family issue. My GRE verbal is... I am thinking to retake it soon and 800 in math. Need Funding. Other: l am an international student even though I came to the US since the senior year of high school. I only had 1.5 years GPA from my new school since I transferred and I am finishing in 3 years. I also jumped a year in high school. Applying to: I am so struggling on making this decision! So I need your help! I have some interested schools and list them below. Qs do not mean any order, I am just confused for which ones I should apply for and what are the chances I can get in with funding. Q1: any chances to top5? (I think the answer is no...) Q2: any chances to UC berkely, Northwestern, Yale, UPenn, Columbia, NYU, UofM? Q3:any chances to Cornell, U of Maryland, Johns Hop, BU, Penn State? Q4: any chances to Ohio State, UIUC and any other suggestions? Thank you so much guys! |

In terms of the super-elite, it's possible that you might get an unfunded offer from Chicago (which is the place to go to study the economics of education). But other than that, it's possible but highly unlikely unless your LORs are stellar.
I like your chances at somewhere in the Top 15-30. I'd suggest considering a few more schools in that range: UCLA, Rochester, UMich |

I definitely agree with Walt however that said, you should still apply to a handful of top 10s because there is always a chance, as a matter of fact, a TMer by the name LagrangeJames (you can look him up in the profile and results 2009) got into Yale last year with a similar profile to yours (however his was a bit stronger)

LagrangeJames had two working papers in econ with profs/co-authors who were writing his recs. So, in that respect, I believe his profile was a lot stronger than the OP's. Ofcourse, if these papers were the QJE type, than there is no comparison.

to Walt, I think I will definitely take your advice to apply for UMich and UCLA! to others, thank you! one of my lors is from a very well known professor in econometrics feild and the other one is from a well known professor in game theory. I will look up LagrangeJames's file too Anyway, thank you to let me know that Chicago is the place to do ED! |
