GRE is changing its format starting from August 2011

As we argue here often about the use of Verbal GRE in admissions, it will be useful for some of TMers to know that GRE is changing substantially starting from August 2011:

    thank you, OneArmedEcon

However, I'm not asking any GRE related question. I'm just pointing out some info that I'm sure can be useful to a significant part of the participants on the Econ forum.

Thanks for posting this here though because I wouldn't have seen it otherwise and it is useful information.

Great I don't feel right having to be in the first wave of the new GRE.

Interesting, it sounds like it will be more difficult for people to cram for the GRE quant section. I wonder why they're offering such a huge 50% discount as an incentive to people during the switch. Obviously this doesn't come anywhere close to the added cost to these people of being unable to prepare as thoroughly as non first wavers in terms of studying resources. Furthermore, given they have a monopoly people won't have substitutes. Maybe it's to avoid lumps in demand (people putting it off to get feedback from others)?

yeah, my guess is that without the discount there would be a big drop in demand for the test diring the first couple of months. People who need the test by December 2011 might choose not to risk and to take the old version while they still can. Those who need it later have the incentive to wait while the initial period of new version testing passes and more preparation materials are available on the market. This will probably create pressure on the testing centres' capacity during both July 2011 and October 2011.
