Profile Evaluation please! I am worried!
Profile:
Type of Undergrad: Bachelor in Econ, China Undergrad GPA: 79/100 (I think it can not reach 3.0, based on my university’s calculating method, it is 2.98, that is what I am confused! And from WES standard, it is just 3.0, major +math: 3.2) Type of Grad: Master in Econ, China Grad GPA: 87/100 (from WES standard, it is 3.7, major +math: 4.0) GRE: I have finished the exam in late Oct., and I guess I can get V600+Q800+AW4.0. TOEFL: 93/120 (speaking 19, I know it is too low) Math Courses: calculus I and II, linear algebra, statistics, dynamic optimization (I have studied many math courses in advanced courses of Economics, such as Real Analysis, Stochastic Process and Differential Equation, but they are not shown in the transcripts). Econ Courses: many, including Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, Advanced Econometrics, Asset Pricing (their grades are all outstanding, ranking among top of my college, including all PHD candidates) Work experience: two years’ macroeconomic research experiences in the largest economic province in China, and then two years’ research experiences as a chief macroeconomic and investment strategy analyst in a securities company ranking among the top five of China (Many universities say “work experience is useless”, OMG!) Letters of Recommendation: 3, all from Chinese professor, one finance professor will stress my math ability (useless!). Research Experience: one paper published in China’s journal, one scholar conference in China, and anonymous reviewer for the best scholarly Economics journal in China for one year (useless?). Besides, there were many economic research programs when I was working, one of which won a national prize (I think it is also not very helpful). Research Interests: Macroeconomics (RBC, monetary economics) and financial economics I am so worried about my undergraduate GPA. I found almost all graduate schools require it higher than 3.0, can I have the opportunity to apply? Which school I should choose? 30-60 or 60-100? And any other suggestions? Please be frank to express your suggestions, I really need your help! |

Just for reference, the OP has a similar thread here (Any suggestion about low GPA and work experiences?)
What matters more than your GPA is your class rank. International GPA's are almost redundant and arenot comparable in a lot of ways to their US counterparts. I am sure that if your university doesn't report your 'GPA' on your transcript, then you have nothing to worry about. Having a converted GPA of 3.0 is fine, if the best in the class had only a 3.1, having a 3.7, and being 20th in the class rankings is not nearly as good. Also, I would go as far as saying that the GPA minimum applies only to North American students, where it really means something. |
