    University of Kentucky or WVU?

So I've got a fully funded offer from each, no other offers to consider. I'm not sure yet about research interest other than that I want to do micro not macro fields. My goal is to work in academia at some level. I visited UK and liked the people I met. I have not visited WVU. However, I like where WVU is better geographically because I like mountains and it is closer to family. I cant find WVU in any rankings, but UK is ranked 56th.

    Thoughts?

Kentucky. Better institution in general I suppose, better ranked school, good public econ program. Good basketball team too lol

We probably met at the Kentucky flyout if thats the visitation you are talking about. Based on your research interests I would say Kentucky since their strength is in Micro. Personally, I loved the town and the downtown area when I went exploring Friday and Saturday night. I haven't heard anything about WVU. Good luck with your choice.

Go to Kentucky man...they hire 3 or 4 new senior guys in IO, macro, metrics and probably health econ. Macro maybe not our strength, though we are going to improve the field. Yet we're quite strong, at least in our league, for applied micro such as public, health and labor.

If your interest is micro then Kentucky clearly dominates, especially if you're looking to get a job in academia. They have also done some good hiring recently.

Don't know much about UK, but Morgantown, WV is a pretty miserable place... not that Pittsburgh is much better, but still.

Yeah if location matters at all, Lexington is close to both Cincinnati and Louisville.

Isn't Kentucky well regarded in Urban/Regional economics as well?

I would suggest that Kentucky would be the better of the two.

I think sobel (Sp?) left WVU. Kentucky is strongest in the are a of public economics, but they are a decent program. Their training is supposedly excellent for a school of their level.
