Talking U of toronto vs NYU

Hi,everyone! I am new on this forum

I really want you guys to help decide which school is better

U of T or NYU ? well, Toronto's economics department ranks roughly top 30 in the world while NYU ranks the top 10 for his economics phd in the world.

As for the overall ranking, however, Toronto still ranks the top 30 but NYU just rank about between 40th and 50th and U toronto seems to have more reputation in the world

so, what do you guys think?

Are you deciding what to attend for your undergraduate studies? If so, the two universities both have their strengths. Toronto has a fairly rigorous undergraduate curriculum, whereas with NYU you have access to the finance industry in NYC. Toronto is cheaper though, so that might be a good reason to choose it.

If you're choosing a PhD program, I see no reason to care about the undergraduate ranking. NYU should dominate Toronto for a PhD economics. They don't have official placement on their websites, but according to untitled's data NYU ranks #9 in flyouts. Toronto, even in its best year (2011), is probably a little worse than that.

Care to elaborate? That doesn't seem very nice.

While I have no useful input in terms of the better place to do a PhD (although I would tend to agree with cheateauheart), I should add that Toronto does have a significant financial district. To complete your PhD at Toronto, you'll need to have a master’s degree- you cannot enter directly with an undergrad. However, Toronto does have the "Doctoral Stream" MA program which somewhat replicates the direct entry system in the US.

It's kind of a "thing" on EJMR to make fun of Toronto.

Assuming it's a legitimate query (moot if it's not...), my thoughts:
    - NYU is overall more 'prestigious', whatever the f*** that means. To the untrained eye (and definitely to the non-academic eye), NYU is clearly more impressive.
    - I'm not aware of any field in which Toronto obviously dominates New York.
    - U of T is still an excellent department, and certainly good enough to not close any doors.
    - If one wants to apply for academic jobs in Canada, U of T generally does well there.

IMHO, econgod is from the south. His reference of 'his' with re to inanimate objects reminds me of 'Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck and the author's expressions in southern dialect. If I am not mistaken Canada is all the way northward and it may get cooler there than it does in NY or in some southern states

Assuming you are not joking, it depends on what field you want to specialise in. If you want to do macro, NYU is easily one of the top3 departments right now, but you might get better options if you want to do, say, theoretical econometrics (mind that NYU has aggressively hired field seniors this year, though).
