    @coffeehouse:

    Emailed Stanford just now. According to the reply, they admitted 40 and waitlisted 17 this year, while in previous years they admitted around 65 but maintained no waitlists...

    Wow thank you PlateauG, did you confirm we will all receive funding? Do you know if they intend to admit a smaller cohort this year?

    Edit: Are you sure they did not maintain a waitlist before? Based on TM search, it seems there used to be a waitlist.

    @ coffeehouse

    Did your UPenn waitlist email also say "placed high on our wait list" ?

    I know some schools tell every waitlisted applicant that they are high on the waitlist.

    Yes: Full 5-year funding to everyone if admitted.
    Yes: They waitlisted people so as to better control the class size. Their targeted size this year is around 20.

    Also,
    waitlisted applicants are not ranked... at least according to their reply.

    Anyway, good luck to both of us!

    Econphd1: yes my friend and I both got waitlist with that message. Seems like a few on GC also posted this. Looks like everyone is high on waitlist.

    PlateauG thanks! That's very informative. Goodluck to you too

    That's what the reply says. Also, I cannot find previous waitlist posts on GC for 2013.

    BTW I counted the number of current first-year PhDs in Stanford listed on their website, which is 28 if I counted correct. So they are indeed reducing the number of entering students.......
