I am also open to getting an MA prior (even abroad) and a low ranked PhD program (I want to be an Economist in the private sector, not interested in a research professor appointment) How crazy am I? NbY
Hard to tell without knowing the specifics of your current undergrad institution. I would say that if you get As in your Adv Macro/Micro/Econometrics classes and a good score in Real Analysis, then you can definitely get into some PhD program. Again, hard to tell since you are only starting your undergrad education.
kqtqhd
(I want to be an Economist in the private sector, not interested in a research professor appointment) How crazy am I? I don't understand why you would want to pursue a PhD if you want to go work in industry. There are already plenty of opportunities for those with just a Masters degree. chateauheart
^Agreed. OP should turn this into a thread about whether he should do a PhD. Please include your argument for why you want to do a PhD to place in the private sector, and we can decide if your argument is just wrong (probably the case), or if you're somehow being very creative.
