    Profile Evaluation Econ PhD (2018)

    Sponsored Ad:
    Hi Guys,

First time posting here and wanted to get an evaluation for Fall 2018.

    Undergrad GPA: 2.57
    Major: Economics/Law & Society.
Econ Courses: Principles Macro (B) Intermediate Macro (B) Intermediate Micro (B+,B-) International Trade (A) Law & Economics (B) Intro to Money, Banking, and Credit (B-) The Stock Market (B)

Grad GPA: 3.59 (Will Graduate with 3.63)
    Major: Economics (Masters)
Econ Courses: Intro to Econometrics(A), Economic Models & Forecasting (B+), Financial Economics (B+), Monetary Policy (A-), Advanced Micro/Macro (A-,A), Advanced Econometrics (A), Current Research in Economics (A)
Math Courses: Calc I/II/III/IV(B,B-,C+,A-), Strategies of Proof (B), Advanced Calculus (C+) - my schools version of RA, Linear Algebra (taking this fall)

GREs: Taking in the next month or so. Averaging 161-163 on practice tests but shooting for 165+ Most likely keep retaking until I get a near perfect score.

LOR: 1) Graduate Thesis Advisor. Also been working for him as a research assistant for the past two years so . 2) Two Econ Prof (took courses, grade A and B) 3) Economist (Director) at an Economic Think Tank based in LA.

Research Experience: I spent 2 years as a graduate research assistant to a professor (collecting data, coding, conducting tests, etc) and interned at an economic think tank working on their yearly global opportunities index. I will also be receiving a co-authorship for my work at the think tank.

I am bit concerned regarding my math scores. They're not that great in my opinion and I'm concerned it will greatly affect my chances. I'm honest shooting for schools between 20-50 and maybe a couple of 10-20. I think my research background and my LOR will help cover my weakness in math. I specifically worried about the C's I've received in the math courses. Would like to hear everyone's thoughts on the range of schools I'm applying to. I don't expect to get into a top ten school, just worried that I won't get into any school at all.

    Thanks,

What's the ranking of the school that you're coming from? This will help whomever is trying to give you advice.

Its ranked 110 for top public schools. I know my undergradute grades are terrible. I didn't take school seriously but after working in the private sector for 10 years, I decided to leave my professional career behind to pursue my phd, hence the reason why I am getting a masters degree first. Just trying to get a sense of where I stand a good chance.

You're not competitive for a top 50. You don't have the math scores and you come from a low ranked school. You might be able to get into a school ranked below that.
