metafuze
Hi all! Been lurking the last year, and now hoping to get an idea of range so I can get an early start on applications for the upcoming cycle: PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Econ, typical state school, department not well known. Undergrad GPA: 3.96/4.00 Type of Grad: ARE/AREC top 10 Grad GPA: 3.91/4.00 GRE: Q 169, V 162, AWA 5 Math Courses: Calc 1,2,3 (A,A,A), Linear Algebra 1,2 (A,B), Differential Equations (A), Intro Stats (A), Stat Theory (A), Design of Experiments (A), Math for Economists (A), Proof Writing & Elementary Analysis (Fall '17) Econ Courses: Intro Micro (A), Intro Macro (A), Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Macro(A), Money & Banking (A), Public Finance (A), Environmental Econ (A), History of Econ Thought (A), Intro Econometrics (A), Int Econometrics (B), Advanced Econometrics (Fall '17) Other Courses: The regular stuff Letters of Recommendation: 1. 2-year graduate RA professor, top 15 PhD 2. Department head, rank 20-30 PhD, 2 classes 3. Department head, top 50 PhD, 3 classes, advisor. Research Experience: 2-year RA in grad school, including summer semester Submitting co-authored paper with RA professor next month, journal is low-mid rank. Journal-style research paper for Econometrics class Fall '17 data analysis project with data from large U.S company Teaching Experience: TA, 'Math for Economists' class in grad Tutor for Intro/Intermediate Micro & Macro for for 2.5 years at undergrad Research Interests: Health, Environmental/Nat Res, Labor SOP: Good, you would hope. Concerns: Undergrad program is unknown2 B's (Linear Algebra 2 and Intermediate Econometrics) Proofs/analysis class is not a full analysis class (2/3 proof writing, 1/3 analysis topics) --- I wasn't able to do obtain an RA positions at my undergrad as I was a student-athlete and time constraints were formidable. Is this a problem? My professors have told me to apply to a few top 10-15s, a handful of 20-40, and a couple in the 50 and lower range. Is this too optimistic? Last year's pool seemed competitive and I don't have any particularly prestigious names on my profile. Greatly appreciate any feedback!
