Barcelona GSE (Standard? or Advanced track)

    Sponsored Ad:
    Dear all,

I am trying to figure out the best master degree option for placing me to top level UK or top 40 US and I am VERY interested in staying in Barcelona for my master. Any advice or comment would be really appreciated (Especially current or old BGSE students!).

My concern is whether I can really handle advanced track or not. I've done my bsc economics in the UK and took as many theory courses as possible and did quite well on them. However, my university is not a stellar one, around top 15, hence, my econ courses may not be as rigorous & challenging as top univ like Oxbridge or LSE. Moreover, BGSE standard track seems to be almost the same level as the most British msc economics: LSE msc economics, 1st year Oxford Mphil and UCL msc econ (I may be completely wrong though) and advanced track is more like LSE, UCL MRes level and 2nd year Oxford.

Hence, rather than taking advanced track straightaway, I might choose to study standard and apply for MRes at BGSE (so called delayed(?) track) to stay one more year for advanced track and make phd applications while I am doing advanced ones. Do any of you think my scenario convincing? or should I force myself to the advanced track? as it is far better option.

Hello. I am a current master's student at Bgse taking the standard track in the first trimester.

Well. it depends on your background, don't expect too many things from the professors in the advanced track in terms of teaching quality. This is because they assume that the students have advanced knowledge of the subject that they ''teach'' and thus instead of teaching they are just presenting things on the whiteboard. It is very challenging and unfortunately there is no support from the professors, you are on your own. Most of the students taking the advanced track have already taken either a masters or phd courses in their previous universities and they still struggling

Even if you are very motivated, if you don't have a very strong background especially in math you will have very hard time in the advanced.

On the other hand, the standard track is better in the sense that the professors really teach the subject. However, be ready to solve for one year problem sets. It is comparable to the best one-year masters across the Europe and if you do well you are going to have great opportunities

Re: Barcelona GSE (Standard? or Advanced track)

Thank you for your reply! I got some questions to ask!

Would you say the standard track is equivalent to LSE Msc econ, UCL Msc econ or M1 at TSE?
The bgse website says limited no. of standards track students are allowed to proceed to MRes. How limited is the place for such students and difficult in terms of grade requirement for standard trackers (I guess you will be given a conditional offer to move from Msc to MRes).
Do you think my 2 year plan at BGSE seems convincing? and are there any students in standard track aiming for Phd?
