needhelpadvice
Would you turn down a top 20 for a top 50 because the uni has supervisors aligned with your research interests? Or am I going crazy and being irrational?
tutonic
If you're looking at comparably ranked places, the general advice is that you should go with the one which has faculty members you prefer to work with. However, if the difference is so vast, as in this case, you should attend the top 20 programme. Your interests might change during grad school and a significantly higher ranked programme has better median placements.
YaSvoboden
That’s a big gap. I have to recommend top 20 as well. The top 50 would have to be super strong in one area and the top 20 relatively weak to make this even a consideration.
tm_member
Go to the top 20 school. There's nothing you can't study at those schools. The different sub-fields within fields aren't that different.
