Role Call for Econ PhD Applicants in their Own Forum
Hopefully this will get the ball rolling with posting profiles in this forum. FYI I am currently enrolled in a lower ranked uni i.e. am trying to transfer to a better program. My justification for reapplying can be seen in the previous post:
http://www.urch.com/forums/graduate-...tml#post318614 (Reapplying for Econ PhD - Evaluate my situation) Current Grad School Courses (books used) Micro Theory (Nicholson) Macro Theory (Heijdra) Math for Economists (Simon & Blume) - but we cover up to static and dynamic optimization using other books Probability Theory (Casella) - tested out of the first two courses of econometrics so got to take the graduate level stats probability Econ Major / Math and Honors Minor from top private uni (Villanova) Overall GPA: 3.76 Econ GPA: 3.95 (one A- in Intro to Econ stats) Math GPA: 3.5 (Calc III (A), Diff Eq and Intro Linear Algebra (B), Intro to Proofs (B) Game Theory (A) Linear Algebra (A) Numerical Analysis (A)Independent Study: Real Analysis (A)) Year Abroad at LSE that didnt count towards my GPA: Macro Principles (B- or 2.2) Intro to Econometrics (B- or 2.2) Social Policy: Econ Topics (B+ or 2.1) Econ History: Integration of Europe's Economy (B+ or 2.1) GRE 1: Q: 720 V: 540 A: 5.5 GRE 2: Q: 770 V: 530 A: still waiting as I just retook it Research Experience: Was awarded an undergrad research grant through Villanova that paid for me to do independent research during the summer of 2005. Contributed to a fellow Villanovan's masters thesis in Chinese Development at Cambridge by performing a probit analysis on data he had collected regarding income and opinion of the government in China since he did not have the econometrics background to properly handle his data. Finally, a research paper I wrote during my senior seminar has been selected as a finalst for the IAES undergraduate research paper competition. The winner gets published in the Atlantic Economic Journal, but that will not be decided until October when I present my paper at the conference along with the other finalists. (Reapplying for Econ PhD - Evaluate my situation)LOR's and SOP (Reapplying for Econ PhD - Evaluate my situation): Both good, but had LOR (Reapplying for Econ PhD - Evaluate my situation)'s from all econ profs and no math profs I am a macro man. Particularly I am interested in monetary policy, monetary policy regimes, and development from an econ history perspective. I have already sent my GRE scores to: Boston U UMaryland Rutgers WUSTL Where else should I consider? How high should I aim? I am not concerned with credits transfering so much as making sure I am in a school that will allow me to be competitive in the academic market and produce the level of research I know I am capable of. |

Dear All:
An unfortunate incident has occured and I am worried as to how significantly it will affect my application. I just received my GRE scores in the mail and got the following: Q:770 (87%) V:530 (67%) A: 4.0 (32%!!!) While this is obviously a horrible analytical writing score, I wanted to know if it will be offset by the fact that I got a 5.5 (87%) last time and that I have a paper that is a finalist for an undergrad research paper competition? How worried should I be about this score? |

You should not have problems with GRE scores (given those Universities that you send the score to).
As it seems that you will use yr current Ph.D for the application. Do you have any recommendations from Prof. at this program ? I am not sure about the effect of this to both your application as well as your current study (I just think abt the possibility that ad com may check with your current Ph.D. programs about you). Maybe you need some comments from others in this forum. Any ideas are welcomed ! |

No I do not have any recommendations from professors at my current institution as I am trying to be as discrete as possible about the whole process.
The possibility that ad coms might contact faculty at my current program did worry me. However, if you check the link to my past thread, it seems the consensus is that people trying to transfer is pretty common and that profs and ad coms have better things to do with their time than discuss individual students. However, if anyone disagrees or knows of any situations where that did happen, please let me know. P.S. Where are the other profiles? I know Im not the only one applying this year. |
