jlist 's dreams are becoming reality.
Dear Polka: I thought that number should be posted too....I will check. I believe the number that you are looking for is ~68% over the 1994-present period. What I am saying is that roughly 2 out of 3 from 1994-present have passed ALL three core exams in their first try.

This is the number that surprised me, as I thought that we would be sub 50%. Many of you write with my priors.

Best,
John

This is absolutely true. I don't know what people want to hear about Chicago. There is no free lunch, it is true. But it is not that hard. People still fail the exams (not a small proportion - but not horrible), but I think the system is not specifically designed to make the students fail. I don't know where is the problem. I am not even sure whether there is a problem. In fact, I think everything is perfect here and I am quite happy. I would do it again!

Ok so I guess things have not changed. Same number of admits as always, same benifit's to first year students, same modest amount of people failing examens.

Thats what I wanted to know.

Wow, that's pretty solid, all in all. Sure beats my class here. Only 6/26 passed both on the first round (one of whom already has a PhD in mathematical finance, so I'm not sure how much he really counts). That rate seems to be relatively par for the course over the last few years, and if history is any indication, we can maybe expect another 9-10 to pass here in Jan. I'm really regretting coming to Wisc.

Wow. It seems that UC is not that bad after all. Are there any other programs than Wisconsin that are known to be notorious? I hear that UVA used to be one of them, but that started to change.

Hi,

I am also a first year at UChicago (in econchick's cohort), and I absolutely love it here. There is no doubt that we work hard, but I think it would be naive to think that it is any different at the other top schools.

I was very worried that the environment here would be hostile, and that the most nerdy, competitive students would have self-selected into this program to make it even worse, but people here are really nice and helpful, and I've had a great time so far.
