Skipper 's dreams are becoming reality.
Iowa v. Illinois v. WUSTL

I'm interested in all 3 of these schools, but I'm having a hard time distinguishing them. They are similar in terms of both rankings and geography. Does anyone have any insight into these programs (e.g., in terms of strengths, atmosphere, attrition, etc.)? Thanks.

I don't know much about Iowa or illinois, but WUsTL just hired several big name profs.

Iowa seems to be a very good department in terms of Macro.

Can someone else give more information about it? I am thinking about applying there.

Iowa and Wash U obviously concentrate heavily on Macro. They also seem to be pretty decent in Econometrics as well. UIUC seems to have a more diversified department, but still does well in both Macro and Econometrics.

Allthough geographically they are not far from one another, Wash U is in St. Louis, UIUC is right outside of Chicago, while Iowa is right outside of...well not much. So the surroundings will be quite different at each school.

I don't know anything about attrition at these schools.

WUSTL might just be a good bet for the moment. It is underrated and therefore overlooked. What's more, the new hires (check the web) will be followed by about 6 more new hires etc. etc. I am a first year and we are "feeling" the changes (which means we are working extremely hard and our training is better). For someone with trouble getting into a top 15 school (which, in reality, is just about everyone) getting into WUSTL is probably comparatively easy considering the value of the training you'll get and future rankings. A bit of a risk, obviously (and St. lOuis kinda sucks a lot) but a great place for research.

I'm not sure how important this is to the poster, but for the record, I'm not sure it's accurate to say that Illinois-Urbana Champaign is right outside of Chicago. It's more like 2-3 hours away in the middle of corn country. Having grown up in Northern Indiana, I can vouch that you can be 2-3 hours away from Chicago and easily forget that it exists.

mfarhanmajid just joined TestMagic.
i am currently a undergrad econ major at WashU. All i can say is that I think WasHU has the resources to pull itself into top 15-20 within a few years. Some one mentioned WAshU is good for MAcro- personally I think ist pretty good for Micro too- now that we have David Levine- the big shot in gametheory,etc- also this place now has a lot of property righst experts- IP, property rioghts for poor, etc...i have herad a lot about Iowa state and I think that currentky it is better than WashU- but in the near future I see WashU better than what it is today and God knows best.....

Don't forget Ploberger for Econometrics. In the strange world of asymptotic theory, he's one of the greats...
