Is this an extremly bad idea?

Hey guys~

I am planning to apply for Ph.D. programs in Economics and in Finance.

I wonder...is it an extremly bad idea to apply for both Economics and Finance simultaneously within a same school? ...Given that most of Finance departments are in business schools while most of Econ departments are in social science or liberal arts schools...will they communicate with each other? If they will, probably they will think I don't really know what the field I am really interested in and thus can set my mind to is...

What do you guys think? Thank you very much!~

I know there are SOME schools where you can fulfill the requirements for an M.S. in mathematical finance while you finish your Econ Phd.

Additionally, some schools (such as Carnegie Mellon) offer a specialized PhD in Financial Economics.

Communicate with each other? Sh*t, they barely know what they hell is going on with their own huge stack of applications. Don't think for a second that most schools are going to take the time to look up where 500+ other applicants applied to, even if it's in the same university.

Apply to both if you're really interested in both (unless the school restricts you to only one application).

Let me put it this way... Penn and Northwestern both 'forgot' to send out quite a few of the rejection letters this year. Even though I knew I was rejected (since people on TM /gradcafe.com had been accepted), I had to email them around April 15 to get the "unofficial" reject. Official came via mail a few days later, after I inquired.

Not a bad idea at all. I was in both UIUC finance (some $20k) and economics ($14k) last year. Nonetheless, top schools like Yale and Princeton only allow one application per academic year. Harvard had no such limitation though.
