    picking recommenders

In asking for letters of recommendation, what factors should I consider?

More specifically, I'm getting a strong letter from a well-known professor (worked as an RA for her and she advised my honors thesis), but I'm unsure about the other two. There's a professor I worked with two summers ago doing economics research (haven't contacted him a year and a half), another professor I took a seminar with two years ago (again, I've been out of touch with for a year or so), and my boss from a summer internship w/ the state dept (who I know would write me a glowing recommendation, but isn't an academic). Thoughts?

Is the person at the state dept an economist? If yes, get a recommendation from them. As for the other two, just pick the one who knows you best I'd say.
