Though it depends on the particular school, I would work on creating a draft of your SOP that fits on two pages and is probably less than a thousand words. Some schools may allow a longer SOP, but if I remember correctly, others have a suggested length. It would be nice to have a draft that is able to accommodate those schools with a length limit and another that is more extensive for those schools without a length limit. I definitely recommend reading up on the guidelines for the SOPs at each university to which you are applying, though.
As a side note, if you are putting the name of the institutions to which you are applying in your SOP, be sure to triple check and make sure you are sending each university the correct SOP!

hahah,
i did that twice when i applied, aaaah, good times another note, some people mention professor names in their SOP, particularly ones they would like to work with....a good idea would be to check if they are still there, or even alive, (yes this is bad, but it has been done)
