Number of LORs for MIT

Hi guys,
I have the following question. MIT economics asks for 3 LORs.
The thing is that I have 4 really good reccomenders. So I was wondering what would happen if I sent 4 LORs instead of 3. What would the adcom think of this? Would it harm or benefit my application?

Many thx,
ELM

im actually sending 4 to each school im applying to. i havent bothered calling the schools about it. i dont think it would be harmful...but then i might be wrong. princeton was the only one i asked, and they said its cool.

Along those lines, the University of Virginia app says something like "Only include a 3rd recommendation if required by the department." I've looked over the website, and can't find any info on it. Does anyone have any experience with the econ dept. and recommendations? Suggestions? I have 3 lined up, but I obviously don't want to send it if they don't want a 3rd.

kartelite radiates success.
I had 3 letters sent to UVA, I don't think it would be bad if they only required two, I'm guessing the adcoms realize most schools ask for three and they wouldn't frown upon a third (the "Admissions Office" guidelines are usually a little overly strict, like the UCSD GRE requirements).

question ...

So, if a school asks for three references and has an online form that only allows for three places, you would have the 4th recommender send it in by mail?

In that case, you should limit the number of letters to three.

I don't know 'cause I'm not applying to either one of them. But if you can register more than 3 recommenders (online), then go ahead and do it. If you can't, don't send an additional letter by mail.

i actually talked to a lady at princeton and she said i should go ahead and have the 4th letter sent through mail. she said they only have 3 recs online because of limitations on the online system, or something to that effect.

Well... that's a different story then. I know for Stanford GSB, they explicitly said that it'd be highly inappropriate to send more than 3 letters.
