Are you by any chance a valedictorian from Peking, Tsinghua, Shanghai Jiao Tong, or something like that? How about Fulbright? Basically, anything internationally known?

Peking U. I heard about fulbright or imf scholarship, but dont know much about the detail.

How highly do your recommenders think of you? The best? Top 1%/5%/10%? If you're the best of one of the best (top 1%), you should definitely aim higher.

gre scores are pretty much not that imp for american trained people unless they are really bad.
rec letters can matter a lot esp if the person writing the letter is known to the people on the committee. thats all i can think of
