actually, the problem is asymetric information. us professors dont know we are trained with western style economics and the teachers have phd abroad. all they know about american style econ in china may be ccer. so hardly can we get lor from star professors. a senior told me that if no star prof speaks for you then no top 15 unless international olympic medals speak for you. good points

maybe we should go to mphil in hongkong first.

That's not a bad idea at all. By the way, Tufts University has a terminal Master program. I remember one Chinese graduate of that program went on to do a PhD at Yale.

ThanQ Ricardinho and sgary! I'm just figuring out how to make the most of my final year to take some higher-level courses in economics and boost my grades if at all possible.

Considering the duration of the Phd journey, the opportunity cost of going to a second or third-tie school is too high. If my application doesn't work this year, hope that I'll be able to make it the following year.
