GRE and AgEcon PhD

Hello everyone! I am in need of a little advice!

I just took the GRE and scored Q670, V550. Should I retake the GRE?? I was admittedly under-prepared and I know I can improve my quant score.

I am applying to Ag Econ programs and my top choice is Maryland. I realize this is a very competitive program and my quant score should be higher, but the rest of my application is strong.

I already have an M.S. in Resource Econ with solid research experience. I also have teaching experience (undergrad statistics) and 4 years work experience in a government statistical agency. LOR's, SOP and GPA (undergrad and grad) are great.

If I retake the GRE at the beginning of January, I believe I can still make Jan 15 and later deadlines. However, I would rather not retake them if I don't have to...

Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks!

YOU MUST RE-TAKE THE GRE AND GREATLY IMPROVE YOUR QUANT SCORE. AT A BARE MINIMUM, YOU NEED 700Q... BUT PROBABLY MUCH HIGHER (and I'm being generous with the 700 since this is AgEc, since it really probably does need to be higher).

Well, if you apply to the top schools, I am sure you will get in somewhere with that 670. People in this forum really over emphasize the GRE. If you talk to a memeber of an adcom, you would really be surprised by how little emphasis they put on the GRE. However, pure econ deparments really put a great emphasis on the GRE score. In any case, if there is a particular school you want to get into and you don't wanna go anywhere but that school, you GRE score might be a problem.

Econ2006 radiates success.
I think adcoms downplay the GRE only after an applicant has achieved a threshold score (i.e., 750 or so). At my school (Cornell), I came across a set of application folders, and each had the quant. GRE score prominently listed on the front of the folder (but no mention of GPA). Good quant. scores are never sufficient to be admitted, but poor ones can definitely keep you out of a good progam.

Even for AgEcon schools, 670Q is a bit low, and is worth re-taking.
